Home Ed PE group, Haydn Road, Nottingham, from Tuesday 24 May

Date: Starting Tuesday 24 May 2016, for 12 weeks.

Time: 11.15am to 12.15pm.

Venue: Robin Hood Gymnastics Club, Unit 1, Ellesmere Crescent, Haydn Road, Sherwood, Nottingham, NG5 1DX.

Area: about 2 miles north of the city centre, on the western side of Sherwood, towards Basford. Brown Line buses go nearby. A handy landmark is the Nottingham Free School, across the road.

Age range: 4 to 12 years old.

Lessons are every Tuesday for 12 weeks, starting on Tuesday 24 May, and cost £48 per child for the series (which works out at £4 per lesson).

Children will explore running, jumping and some mini gymnastic skills.

Nearest bus stop: “Leonard Avenue“, on the Brown Line along Hucknall Road. There are frequent buses throughout the day; the 15, 16, 16C or 17 all go there. In town, these buses go from stops T1 and T2 on Milton Road just north of Trinity Square, opposite the Victoria Centre.

Alternatively, if you’re coming from out of town along the Yellow Line along Nottingham Road, your nearest bus stop is called “Haydn Road”. Or if you’re coming from out of town along the Purple or Lime lines, your nearest stop would be a different one called “Haydn Road”. Compared to getting a Brown Line bus, these options mean a bit more walking along Haydn Road itself.

Parking: There is parking outside the gym.

Home Rangers home ed drama group at Nonsuch Theatre, city centre, Fridays

Date: Friday mornings in term-time.

Time: 10am to 12 noon.

Venue: N_SPACE, the home of Nonsuch Theatre. 32a Clarendon Street, Nottingham, NG1 5JD.

Area: City Centre, not far from the Nottingham Trent University tram stop.

Age range: No formal age limits. The current group varies from 5 to 13.

Price: £8 per session, or £45 per half term, or £82 for the 12 weeks.

Booking: No need to book – you can just turn up and pay on the day. Alternatively, you can book and pay in advance to get the discount.

Discovering & making theatre

Exploring creativity through discovering and making theatre is the perfect way for young people to begin to developing skills that will see them excel in later life. Not only will they gain confidence in expressing themselves but they’ll also become leaders, creators and imaginative team players.

This weekly class from Nottingham’s international theatre company will see participants gain knowledge and understanding of different theatrical forms from throughout theatre history. They’ll practically develop performance skills, experience the many opportunities the arts can provide, explore plays, create their own work inspired by the world around them and, most of all, have fun!

Landmarks: The venue is round the corner from Nottingham Women’s Centre, and opposite the Friends’ Meeting House.

Nearest tram stop: “Nottingham Trent University“. All trams passing through the city centre will stop here – you don’t need to be on a particular line. Tram information.

Nearest bus stop: The venue is less than half a mile from the Old Market Square, and a similar distance from the Victoria Centre, putting it close to a large number of city centre bus stops.

If you’re getting the 28, 30, 31, 35 or 36, don’t go all the way in to the city, but get off at “Clarendon Street” bus stop on Talbot Street. Likewise, if you’re getting the 34, 77, 78 or 79, get off at “Wollaton Street” – or while that one’s unavailable due to building works, “Tollhouse Hill”.

Parking options:

Onstreet parking on Clarendon Street: Zone 1, £1 per 30 mins.
Talbot Street or College Street: 50p per 30 mins.
As the tram stop is close, it’s worth considering one of the Park and Ride car parks.

Home ed family bowling meetup, city centre, once a month

Date: a Wednesday afternoon, once a month in term time.

Area: Nottingham City Centre, near Lace Market tram stop.

Age range: Mixed, including some parents!

This is a mixed ages social event. Some parents bowl along with their young people but others sit and chat whilst keeping an eye on their young people. The emphasis is on having fun and meeting other families. It’s a great activity for new people to start with.

The bowling alley can be a noisy place and has coin operated games machines with flashing lights and loud noises, which can be distracting or upsetting for some.

Home ed sessions at Nottingham City Gymnastics Club, Tuesdays & Thursdays

Date: Tuesday and Thursday afternoons during termtime. You can choose between Tuesday and Thursday, or do both.

UPDATE: From Sept 2016 there are extra days and adjusted timings – please see new post.

Venue: Six Ways Community Centre, Denton Green, Broxtowe, Nottingham, NG8 6GD.

Age range: 4 to 16 maximum; in reality the current age groups are more like 4 to 12. You don’t have to have done any gymnastics before.

Area: Broxtowe, on the 35 and 78 bus routes.

From the city centre, it’s about 3 miles, out north-west-ish through Aspley: towards Eastwood or Kimberley or Junction 26, but not that far. The gym club is about 300 metres from one of the entrances to Broxtowe Country Park.

Time: 1pm to 2pm, 2pm to 3pm, or do both hours.

The first hour is the “structured” session, 1pm to 2pm. The coaches guide people through doing specific activities.

The second hour is the “unstructured” session, 2pm to 3pm. The children decide for themselves what to practice, with the coaches on hand to keep an eye and to help if requested.

The Tuesday session and Thursday session both follow this format.

Parents and other children can wait in a sort of small café area with a window through to the gym. Or you can leave and do errands, as long as the club has your phone number.

Price: If you’re visiting, one hour £5, two hours £7.50, or if it’s your first time it may be free (ask at the club).

If you’re signing up long-term, you pay by the month. At current prices it works out £4.05 for one hour, down to £2.70 per hour if you went to all four hours. Prices page.

Booking: At the time of writing, both days are full up with a waiting list. You can contact the club on the morning of a session and find out if there’s a place that day because of someone missing it.

To get onto the waiting list, or sign up if a place becomes free, go to the NCGC sign-up page and look for where it says “Home Education Gymnastics”.

The club also runs children’s gym sessions in “after-school” hours, open to all. Most of those are at Six Ways; some are at the Portland Centre in West Bridgford.

Buses: The 78 (Turquoise Line) and 35 (Orange Line) buses stop almost next to the club, at Coleby Road Top bus stop, and are fairly frequent. Both buses go into Nottingham City Centre via different routes; the 35 also connects with Bulwell to the north.

Parking: The club building has a small car park. It’s usually possible to park there.

Taster session for new home ed PE group: Haydn Road, Nottingham, Tuesday 10 May

Date: Tuesday 10 May 2016.

Time: 11.15am to 12.15pm.

After the taster, there will be a series of lessons every Tuesday for 12 weeks, starting on Tuesday 24 May and costing £48 per child for the series (which works out at £4 per lesson).

The minimum age is currently 4 years old ~~(although younger ages can be provided for)~~. At the PE Taster session children will explore running, jumping and some mini gymnastic skills.
A tailor-made 12 week PE program will then be assembled based on the fitness levels and requirements of the group, which will be sent out after the Taster session. Each group will be a max of 12 children and will be grouped according to age.

GCSEs etc for home ed teens: info event at Central College, Beeston, Thursday 5 May

Date: Thursday 5 May 2016.

Time: 6pm to 7pm.

Venue: Central College, Beeston Campus, High Road, Chilwell, Beeston, Nottingham NG9 4AG.

Age range: The various courses are for young people age 13 up. The info event is open to all. (Some parents will be bringing their children to hear the info first-hand.)

Central College will be holding their annual information evening for local parents and carers of Electively Home Educated students.

The event will offer the opportunity to find out more about Central’s

* Post 16 offer for students over 16 by September 2016

* Programmes for 14-16 year old students

Central is one of the only FE colleges in the country that offers bespoke GCSE and pre-GCSE programmes for 14-16 year old Home Educated learners (equivalent of Years 10 and 11) as well as full time infill placements for Year 11 students.

The pre-GCSE programme for Years 9, 10 & 11 is designed to offer further development in English, Maths and Science before progressing onto the GCSE programme or a full time vocational course the following year.

The GCSE programme for Years 10 and 11 provides EHE learners with an opportunity to gain GCSE qualifications for progression post-16 and beyond.

Infill placements on a variety of vocational full time college courses for Year 11 students only.

Nearest tram stop: “High Road – Central College”. You need to be on a Toton tram, not a Clifton tram. Tram information.

Nearest bus stop: “Central College”, on the 36 route, Orange Line and Trent Barton Indigo.
(don’t mix up this stop with the one on the Green Line which is also called Central College – different building.)

Parking: the Central College page about parking at its sites says “No on-site parking for students (07:00 – 17:00)”. This sounds as though perhaps you can park there after 5pm, for evening events such as this. If anyone has better info about local parking, please add a comment below.

Children’s Tap Jam, Netherfield, Wednesday 4 May

Dance participation event mainly for children, with live music, at Loco Youth Centre in Netherfield, Nottingham, on Wednesday 4 May 2016, free. Tap shoes available to borrow. Dance, or watch and listen.

5pm till 6pm. Maybe arrive slightly early if you need to find yourself some tap shoes.

This is actually the last in a series, but you don’t need to have been to the previous ones to come to this – beginners still welcome.

Parents & carers are welcome to join in.
